Underneath this chalk and limestone, hundreds of miles of rock have been excavated to provide underground galleries for the housing and maturing of the wine.

This 4* chateau is the finest hotel in the region. It was originally built as a private residence by the Pommery family at the end of the 19th century. It is located about 1 ½ miles from the centre of Reims adjacent to (and probably on top of) the cellars of Pommery, Veuve Clicquot and Ruinart. The Hotel de la Paix is the finest 3* hotel in the city of Reims and has recently undergone a multimillion pound renovation. Reims, the city of kings and the gateway to Champagne is less than 2 ½ hours drive from Calais and an ideal location for a Grape Weekend. The town of Epernay, situated on the banks of the River Marne 20 miles south of Reims, shares claim with Reims to the title of ‘capital of Champagne’. The town is surrounded by the grand cru and premier cru classified villages where the best grapes are grown. While the streets may not be paved with gold, there are said to be over 100 million bottles of Champagne in the cellars of the town, with the Moet and Chandon cellars holding over 25 million bottles alone.
